On the 10th anniversary of his death, the man born Parish Lesane Crooks enjoys a very different reputation. Not only is he regarded by fans and peers as rap's greatest poet,
he is increasingly revered as an inspiration - a community-minded individual committed
to the rights of women and the underprivileged. That new reputation will be reinforced
today when his remaining ashes are scattered at a sacred site in Soweto,
during a ceremony attended by the country's former president, Nelson Mandela.
The ceremony will be led by the late musician's mother, Afeni Shakur,
who hopes to develop a relationship between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the
Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation, a centre for creative arts open to children aged 12 to 18.
"Nelson Mandela's contribution to the people of South Africa has been immeasurable
and I look forward to helping with his work all over the country,"
Afeni Shakur says. "I feel blessed to be able to visit South Africa, especially Soweto.
Events that happened there are so much a part of our history and it will be an honour for my son to rest in this special place: the birthplace of the South African struggle for democracy."
Born in New York's East Harlem, Tupac (pronounced too-pok) had a troubled childhood.
His godfather was convicted of murder and his stepfather spent four years on the FBI's most wanted list.
Tupac, who attended a Harlem stage school at the age of 12,
seemed to transcend his circumstances. A popular student,
he began his career in 1991 when he rapped on a single by
the alternative rap group Digital Underground. The release of his debut album,
2Pacalypse Now, brought him success and condemnation from critics who railed against its controversial lyrics.
After that, he was seldom out of the spotlight. In 1992 he was charged with shooting two off-duty policemen, but the case was dropped due to a lack of evidence.
He made his views known in his songs:
"They got me running from the police, nowhere to go
With the lights out, rollin' down a dirt road
But I ain't goin' alive, I'd rather die than be a convict
